Iron and Steel in Colonial America. Steel made this way was called "cast steel." By the late 18th century "cast steel" was being used for cutlery and chisels. Contrary to popular belief a chisel marked "Cast Steel" was not cast! It was forged from a bar of steel that had been made through the crucible process.
